Seventy-eight boxes were filled with school supplies during Saturday’s “Stuff the Bus” event at Walgreens and Walmart in Tumwater.

The supplies will help create 600 backpacks for children in need in the Tumwater School District, according to event organizer Colleen Casey.

“Our goal is to help all kids start the school year off right, with supplies in hand and ready to go,” she said.

Tumwater families in need of help with supplies can show up at their local elementary or middle school office a week before school begins and request a backpack, district spokeswoman Kim Howard said.

Another option is the Little Red Schoolhouse Project, which is giving away school supplies and clothing to needy children enrolled in Thurston County schools from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday at Capital High School, 2707 Conger Ave. N.W., Olympia.
