Olympia hair salon, music store damaged by fire

CHELSEA KROTZER

An Olympia hair salon and a music store were damaged after a fire broke out Friday night, causing an estimated $300,000 in damage.

The fire was reported at 11:37 p.m. at Studio B Hair Design & Waxing Studio, in the 2700 block of Devoe Street Southeast.

Crews arrived to see smoke and fire coming from inside the two-story building and through the roof, according to an Olympia Fire Department news release.

Investigators think the fire started in the salon and burned into the attic, the release states. The cause remains under investigation.

Salon owner April Garcia was assessing the damage Saturday morning. The salon moved to the Devoe Street location a year ago and had just finished a three-month renovation.

“Half the salon is destroyed,” Garcia said. “Half is salvageable, but the rest is just charred.”

Garcia leases spaces in the salon to seven contracted stylists.

A nearby business owner notified Garcia of the blaze Friday night. By the time she got to the salon, it was engulfed in flames.

“The beams, the whole roof has to be ripped off and taken down,” Garcia said.

Firefighters told Garcia that a dryer could have started the fire.

Crews were able to stop the fire from spreading beyond the salon, but the music-repair shop below the salon was damaged from a broken water pipe, the release said.

Four engines, a ladder truck, two medics and a command unit responded with help from Lacey Fire District 3 and Thurston County Fire District 13.
