Aberdeen Fire department hires station's first female firefighter
CHELSEA KROTZERThe Aberdeen Fire Department hired the first female firefighter in the station's history. Monica Myers was hired on as a firefighter and medic, the first female to be hired since the station was established 122 years ago. "It's kind of a history making event for us, too, and we feel very good that we are getting an excellent candidate to become the next firefighter medic for the department," said Fire Chief Dave Carlberg. Myers, a graduate of Tacoma Community College, previously worked as a volunteer lieutenant for the Montesano Fire Department and with Olympic Ambulance in Thurston County. She was selected after going through various physical, physiological and medical screenings and tests. "One of the things we were looking for was a paramedic," said Capt. Mark Dulin. "She actually did a ride with us somewhat during her training period, so we did know a little bit about her already."Myers will complete three days of eight hour training before starting shift work. ckrotzer@theolympian.com
