How South Sound will remember 9/11

The nation will pause today in recognition of the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The heroes and victims of 9/11 will be honored at these local events:

 • A public remembrance ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Firefighters Memorial at 3301 Ruston Way in Tacoma. Mayor Marilyn Strickland and Tacoma Interim Fire Chief James P. Duggan will speak.

 • At Joint Base Lewis-McChord, a chaplain will give a brief message at noon at the Four Chaplains Memorial Chapel. The chapel will be open from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and will host a prayer offering and candle lighting to remember those who died on Sept. 11.

JBLM fire stations will hold a moment of silence at 5:46 a.m., the time the first plane hit the World Trade Center. Law enforcement personnel on the base will hold moments of silence at their shift changes during the day.

All fire and police officials on base will wear badge shrouds.

Madigan Army Medical Center will hold a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. at the Madigan Pond. It will include comments from the center’s leaders and time for staff members and visitors to reflect in silence.

 • West Pierce Fire & Rescue will host a dedication for its reflection park, which was built to display and honor a piece of steel from the World Trade Center. The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. at 3631 Drexier Drive W. in University Place, in front of the West Pierce headquarters. A New York City firefighter who responded on 9/11 will attend the dedication.

 • DuPont will recognize Patriot’s Day by ringing its clock tower throughout the day, corresponding with the times that each plane crashed into the World Trade Center.

 • Sea-Tac Airport will honor the anniversary by posting the colors and a changing of the guard throughout the morning at the central checkpoint. It will hold a moment of silence and shut down checkpoints for one minute at 5:46 a.m.
