Smoke from eastern Washington fires seen here

Smoke from eastern Washington wild fires is flowing into western Washington on the backs of easterly winds, triggering unnecessary 911 calls in several southwest Washington counties.

Emergency call centers in Lewis, Thurston, Clark, Cowlitz and Skamania counties all reported calls related to the hazy air Wednesday from members of the public who assumed the smoke was from local fires, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

Over the next day or two, smoke is expected to reach the South Sound area through the Columbia Gorge and gaps in the Cascade mountains.

The public is asked not to call 911 to report the wild fire haze. Anyone who sees a column of smoke should report it to 911 or 800-562-6010.
