Volunteer Spotlight: Vicki Martin

Vicki Martin sees volunteering as a wonderful way to enhance her life.

During graduate school, she volunteered with juveniles at two maximum security detention centers, helping the inmates improve their skills. Her most recent volunteer work is at the Dispute Resolution Center, where she is a trained mediator. She helps resolve disputes between citizens in a lower-cost community setting that would otherwise be managed in the more expensive legal system.

She also enjoys working with kids. She has fun volunteering with the Olympia School District’s new STEM (Science, Technology, Electronics, and Math) program. She relishes the opportunity to help students get excited about the sciences, while preparing them for the future.

Martin said, “I don’t know who gets more out of the experience.”

She said she learns from people she has helped and loves to share and motivate others to get out there. “Don’t waste time. Every second counts.”
