Inslee will address Panorama City group

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Inslee is scheduled to appear Tuesday at the Panorama City’s Democratic Study Group’s regular meeting. The event is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Panorama Auditorium, 1670 Circle Loop SE, Lacey, and the event is open to any member of the public.

Also scheduled to attend and speak are Linda Oosterman and Steve Fossum, candidates for nonpartisan commissioner positions with the Thurston County Public Utility District.

Inslee, who faces Republican Rob McKenna on Nov. 6, is scheduled to speak for 15 minutes and take questions or comments from the audience. For details, call Ruth Shearer at 360-438-5682.

Panel: Councilman has right to call Inslee "lying whore"

A Spokane city councilman didn't violate city ethics rules by calling Gov. Jay Inslee "a lying whore" in an email, a city ethics committee ruled Wednesday.

The Spokane Ethics Committee voted unanimously that the slur, which was part of a letter signed by Councilman Mike Fagan and two others, didn’t violate city ethics rules because of the inability to establish that it harmed the city. They also said that Fagan’s free speech rights likely trump the ethics code.

“We can’t really tell a public official what they can and cannot say,” said Committee member Monica Holland. “Political speech is one of the most protected types of speech that we have in this country. So while the conduct may be perceived to be unprofessional and unbecoming to a publicly elected official and perhaps reflect badly on our city, I don’t know that we can really enforce anything, because it’s free speech at the end of the day.”
