It will cost the all-volunteer staff at Northern, Olympia’s all-ages music project, about $5,000 to replace the sound equipment stolen during a burglary, staff member Mariella Luz said.

The burglar or burglars forced entry by throwing a rock through a window at Northern’s new building on Legion Way downtown between Jefferson and Adams streets. Stolen items included speakers, monitors, 12 microphones, an equalizer, a mixer and wiring, Luz said. Northern moved into its new site in April.

The burglary at Northern was discovered Sept. 29. A day earlier, someone broke into another downtown business, Copper Moon Massage on Columbia Street, and stole jewelry, paintings, photos and other items. Olympia police have said residential burglaries in Olympia are skyrocketing in 2012, and now, downtown businesses appear to be targets.

Northern has had to cancel one show, Luz said. It since has been using borrowed equipment from local musicians.

Luz said there will be a benefit at the downtown bar The Brotherhood on Oct. 31 to help Northern. Also, proceeds from a silent auction of artwork at the Northern that runs through Nov. 1 will go towards replacing the equipment, she said.
