Marriage is not about love and equality

The recent ads in support of same-sex marriage play upon our compassion. Doesn’t it just seem right and fair to allow same-sex marriage? The answer is yes.

But wait. Is marriage about love and equality? The answer to that is no.

Marriage is an institution protected by most societies as the place where family is honored and protected. Marriage is really about the children. Protecting marriage protects children. It provides a nurturing environment where children learn what being a husband and being a mother is all about.

In that environment, a husband and a wife teach by example and admonition how men and women relate and function in society.

If we diminish the significance of marriage, or confuse the reason for marriage, we will seriously damage our society in the large term.
