Capital sweeps No. 1 singles, doubles
OLYMPIA – Capital High School captured the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles titles at the conclusion of the 2A Evergreen Conference subdistrict boys tennis tournament at the Capitol City Tennis and Athletic Center. The top five singles players and doubles teams advance to next weekend’s 2A District IV tournament at Mint Valley Racquet Club in Longview. Capital freshman Ty Gentry defeated Tumwater’s Zach Drake, 6-1, 6-1, in the singles final, and the Cougars’ top doubles team of Mathias Burlingame and Doug Doenges topped W.F. West’s Kenny Saari and Daniel Blondahl, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, in the doubles final. Burlingame and Doenges lost to the W.F. West pair in straight sets in the teams’ Sept. 26 match. “That was a tough match to come out and win,” Capital coach Tom Alongi said. “That was a big win for them.” Black Hills’ Jimmy Do earned third place and Capital’s Travis Miller captured the fifth and final spot to district. In addition Drake in singles, Tumwater sends its top doubles team of Ryan Gudbrandson and Ryan Padgett after placing third with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Centralia’s Mark Allen and Kevin Murphy.
