There may be better options than Prop 1
MICHAEL WILSONWe may be going down the wrong path with Proposition 1. Unfortunately, the public is left to believe that there are only two choices: a government PUD or a government-granted monopoly. Why not a third choice? Maybe we should have an opportunity to choose our electricity provider from a number of companies. Ten years ago, Texans opened up the electricity market in their state and today homeowners in many parts of Texas can choose from a number of providers offering various rates and plans, rates that are often lower than what we have in Washington state. For one ZIP code in Houston, I found more than 100 options with rates starting as low as 6.6 cents per kwh and going up to 13 cents per kwh. We can do better than Proposition 1 and save money at the same time.
