An important flood-warning station on the Chehalis River near Porter has been vandalized twice in the past two months, temporarily knocking it out of commission, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It appears to be the work of metal thieves, Grays Harbor law enforcement officials told federal officials who gather real-time stream flow data at the river station. Emergency-management agencies use the data to monitor river conditions and issue flood warnings to protect people and property.

The station was restored to temporary service Friday, but it will be three or four weeks before  new equipment can be purchased and installed at a more visible location on the river in a bid to deter thieves, USGS spokesman John Clemens said.

Anyone with information about the vandalism to the flood-warning station should contact the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Department at 360-249-3711.
