Blazers fall short in battle for league title

NARROWS 3A: Wilson shuts out Timberline, 3-0, for league’s girls soccer championship

Staff writerOctober 31, 2012

Few on the Wilson High girls soccer sideline can recall anything about 1982, but all of them know it was a long time ago.

Too long, in fact.

The Rams scored three goals in the first 26 minutes and overwhelmed Timberline, 3-0, in a winner-take-all match to win the Narrows 3A League championship at Stadium Bowl on Tuesday night.

It was Wilson’s first league crown in girls soccer in 30 years.

“That was the year I was born,” Rams coach Angie Karabaich said with a chuckle.

The teams tied 1-1 earlier in the season in Lacey, setting up the league title match on the final day of the regular season.

And the Brittainy Canonica-to-Megan Chambers combination cashed in on a couple of scoring chances early.

Barreling down the right sideline, Canonica sent a pass that got through to the middle of the penalty box. Chambers seized it and punched it in for what turned out to be the game-winner in the eighth minute.

Perhaps the goal that really put a stamp on this match came 11 minutes later – almost harmlessly when Payton Costello was alone on the left seam and sent a high floater toward the goal.

It carried over Blazers goalkeeper Hailey Holder’s head and into the top of the goal for a 2-0 lead.

“(Wilson) came out and wanted it, in my opinion, more than us,” Blazers coach Jeff Peltier said.

A replay of the Rams’ first goal – a Cononica cross to Chambers – happened in the 26th minute as Wilson outshot the Blazers, 12-10.
