The shooting took place in the 2300 block of state Route 6 in Boistfort where the patrolling deputy noticed a car parked in a turn off at 12:17 a.m.. The deputy stopped to see if the driver needed help.
The driver, a 64-year-old Napavine man, was bleeding heavily from "what appeared to be self-inflicted lacerations," the release said. When the deputy tried to talk to him, the man allegedly lunged from the car with a large knife and "charged" at the deputy. The deputy shot the man then called for medical assistance.
The man died shortly after medics arrived.
A regional Sheriff's Critical Incident Investigation team is investigating. The Napavine man's name has not been released.
The deputy has been with the Sheriff's Office for nine years and is on paid administrative leave effective Thursday, according to Stacey Brown, deputy chief.
