Ward gives W.F. West 2A district soccer title

CHEHALIS – Meghan Ward’s goal on a penalty kick in the 57th minute was all the W.F. West Bearcats needed for a 1-0 victory over Tumwater in the 2A District IV girls soccer title game Thursday night at Bearcat Stadium.

The victory gives the Bearcats, the regular-season champions of the 2A Evergreen Conference, their second consecutive district title.

Tumwater and W.F. West will host first-round 2A state playoff games next week. Tumwater will host either Burlington-Edison or Archbishop Murphy on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The loss snaps Tumwater’s seven-game winning streak.

Black Hills 6, Capital 2: The Black Hills Wolves’ quest for a fourth straight state berth remains alive, as they eliminated EvCo rival Capital in a 2A District IV consolation game. Black Hills advances to Saturday’s winner-to-state, loser-out match against Hockinson at 1 p.m. at Battle Ground Stadium. Whitney Lowe had four goals and two assists – both on goals by Arin Seidlitz – for Black Hills (14-5 overall). Capital ends its season at 11-8.

Rochester 3, Montesano 2: Rochester earned the No. 3 seed into the 1A state playoffs next week. The Warriors will travel to play King’s, the third seed from District I/II/III.

VOLLEYBALL

2A District IV tournament: Capital and Tumwater each won first-round matches in Longview to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Tumwater breezed by Centralia, 25-8, 25-6, 25-5, and Capital topped R.A. Long, 25-10, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14.

Tumwater was led by Paige Walker’s 10 digs and six aces, and Hannah Hanson’s 14 kills and three blocks. The Cougars were paced by Dani Tabor (10 kills, 20 digs) and Rachel Erickson (15 kills, 17 digs, three blocks).

Tumwater will face Mark Morris, which swept Black Hills, 25-23, 25-23, 25-10, in its opening-round match, at 11 a.m. Saturday in the winner-to-state semifinal at Lower Columbia College. Capital takes on Ridgefield, which swept Aberdeen, at 11 a.m. Saturday in a winner-to-state semifinal at Mark Morris. The semifinal winners play for the district title at 4 p.m. at Mark Morris.

Black Hills stayed alive by beating Centralia, 25-23, 25-16, 25-20. Hope Mortensen had 15 kills and eight blocks for the Wolves.

FOOTBALL

Yelm 64, Mount Tahoma 6: Senior Jacob Swilley rushed 14 times for 243 yards and six touchdowns to break Yelm’s single-game TD mark. He also set the school’s single-season rushing record (1,786 yards), breaking the mark held by Andrew Almeida (1,570 in 2009). Yelm finished its season 5-5.
