Abandoned, condemned Olympia home catches fire

CHELSEA KROTZER

A condemned, abandoned Olympia home was demolished after catching fire Saturday morning.

The fire was discovered by a person walking by the 1400 block of Fones Road just after 7 a.m., according to Olympia Assistant Fire Chief Pat Dale.

The home was engulfed when crews arrived. Nearly two hours later, smoke was still billowing from the house, but no flames were visible.

The city condemned the house for being structurally unsafe, and it was set to be torn down, Dale said. Crews didn’t go inside.

“It was going to be torn down anyway, and it was just too unsafe to enter, so we just wanted to expedite tearing it down so no one else would have a chance to go inside and have that risk,” Dale said.

Crews tore down the house in the afternoon. The cause of the fire is undetermined, Dale said.

Four engines, a ladder truck and two command units totaling about 20 firefighters responded.
