Lone shot crushes Bears

TACOMA - Numbers can be deceiving, and if you’re the Olympia Bears, numbers also can be crushing.

In spite of dominating the shots, 25-1, against Auburn in the teams’ 4A West Central/Southwest bi-district winner-to-state match Saturday afternoon at Stadium Bowl, the Trojans connected on their one shot that was the difference in Auburn’s 1-0 victory over Olympia.

“They definitely made their shot when it counted,” Olympia coach Tessa Effland said.

After a scoreless first half, Hana Mizoguchi’s goal in the 46th minute was all it took to lift Auburn (10-7) to a berth in next week’s Class 4A state playoffs.

Effland said the Bears (9-4-2) played disconnected, in spite of numerous opportunities to connect on a goal, especially in the second half. The Bears allowed only seven goals all season.

“We couldn’t find a system to get a goal,” Effland said. “If we played like we did during the regular season, we would be moving on.”

3A WEST CENTRAL/SOUTHWEST BI-DISTRICT

Bonney Lake 4, North Thurston 0: The Panthers scored three goals in the first 23 minutes to earn their fifth consecutive berth to the Class 3A state playoffs at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.

Haleigh Ryneski scored the winner on a 12-yard shot in the eighth minute for the 2010 state runners-up. Eight minutes later, Jessyka Seger ripped a 25-yard screamer just inside the right post for another goal – and a 2-0 lead. The Panthers outshot North Thurston, 17-4. Madi Lowery had the shutout in goal. Three of the Rams’ four shots were taken by Emily Krall.

Enumclaw 3, Timberline 0: The Hornets held a 2-0 lead at halftime and cruised to a state berth while eliminating Timberline at Highline Memorial Stadium. Jessica Snoen’s goal in the 12th minute gave Enumclaw an early 1-0 lead and Mia Fornelius followed it up with goals in the 35th and 51st minutes.

2A DISTRICT IV

Hockinson 4, Black Hills 2: The Hawks, champions of the 2A Greater St. Helens League, ended Black Hills’ chances of advancing to the 2A state playoffs for the fourth straight year.

Hockinson held a 2-0 halftime lead before Black Hills (14-6) scored twice to tie it, including a goal by Arin Seidlitz in the opening minutes of the second half.
