When is the truth just your opinion?DEAN URIBE
A recent letter informs us that the stance Christian churches take concerning homosexuality is an indication of whether they are based in truth or not. It asserts the Bible is the inerrant word of God and either a church takes the entire Bible as the truth or it is grounded in opinion. Churches grounded in truth, it says, cannot accept homosexuality. I’m struck by how much this position resembles the Islamic mujahideen. Both assert, without proof, that its holy book is the inerrant word of God and the only source of truth. Both disallow mankind from finding any conflicting truth whether through observation or science. Both condemn homosexuality as unnatural despite the contravening evidence. Each uses the threat of hell to enforce its will. The fact is, however, that the Bible is not inerrant. Part of it is true, part is demonstrably untrue and part can be neither proved nor disproved because we have no evidence. Archeologist Kathleen Kenyon, for example, conclusively demonstrated that the biblical story of Joshua at Jericho is false. In any case, nobody follows the dictates of the Bible completely because that would get rather bloody. Some older studies point to environmental factors as the source of homosexuality. Numerous newer studies however show us homosexuality is based in biology and is natural in humans. Thinking Christians, therefore, accept that it was designed by God. The Christian Taliban will, of course, never accept that. This truth demonstrates that their “truth” is really just their opinion.
