MOUNT RAINIER: Chinook, Cayuse closed for winter

The Washington Transportation Department has closed two passes on the east side of Mount Rainier for the winter.

The department said Chinook Pass on Highway 410 and nearby Cayuse Pass on Highway 123 have been closed by recent snow and avalanche danger.

With state lawmakers still trying to negotiate key aspects of the budget, Northwest News Network's Austin Jenkins reports that it is unlikely the Legislature will finish its work by the scheduled end of session Sunday.

"The reality is just getting a budget written and then passed through two chambers takes some time and basically that window is closing," Jenkins writes. "House Budget Chair Ross Hunter has said all along that if there wasn’t a deal by the Monday of the last week, getting done on time starts to become very difficult."
