Obama may draw from Lincoln’s vision
KATE SEVERSONA fter our collective election grind, euphoria and political hangover, it’s time to look forward to the next four years. I imagine that President Barack Obama will channel Abraham Lincoln’s 1865 second inaugural address on Jan. 21, 2013. Our national theme, then and now, is reconstruction. I do not intend to minimize the civil inequality that Lincoln addressed, but we can find relevance in his words. “With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan – to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves, and with all nations.”
