Report: Sealy moving Portland mattress operations to Lacey

Rolf Boone/The Business Blog

Mattress manufacturer Sealy Inc. has announced that it plans to move its Portland-based operations and 128 employees to Lacey, according to a story in the Portland Business Journal.

The story, which cited a company news release, said about 60 percent of the Portland factory's retail customers are located in Washington. The Portland plant's operations and logistics costs also aren't competitive with the brand's sister plants.

The new Lacey plant will serve markets in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska, according to the story.

“This decision was not made lightly by Sealy,” Carmen Dabiero, Sealy's senior vice president of human resources, said in the news release. “However, we believe relocating to Washington state is the best way to serve our Northwest retailers. We will continue to keep employees fully apprised of this transition as decisions and plans are finalized.”

The story also noted that Sealy was being acquired by Lexington, Ky.-based Tempur-Pedic International Inc.
