The last time two Thurston County football teams from the same league made the semifinals? 1984

• Published November 19, 2012

With Capital and Tumwater winning their 2A state quarterfinal games this weekend, not only does it put two Thurston County teams in the state semifinals for the second time in three seasons, but it marks the first time since 1984 two Thurston County teams from the same league are in the state semifinals.

In 1984, both Capital and Olympia -- then members of the Black Hills League -- advanced to the state semifinals. Capital lost to West Valley of Spokane, 22-21, in the state semifinals and Olympia, which topped O'Dea, 21-7, in its semifinal, went on to defeat West Valley, 28-14, in the title game. In 2010, Capital (3A) and Tumwater (2A) each made the state semifinals, with Tumwater eventually capturing the 2A state title, defeating Archbishop Murphy, 34-14.

This weekend's 2A state semifinal games
Capital (10-2) v. Lynden (11-1), 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, Tacoma Dome
Tumwater (11-1) v. Prosser (11-1), 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, Lampson Stadium (Kennewick)
