Thurston roads still closed due to Chehalis River flooding

Several Thurston County roads remain closed as of 2 p.m. today due to flooding near the Chehalis River, according to a Thurston County news release.

According to the release, the closed roads include the following: Moon Road SW at 183rd Avenue SW

201st Avenue SW at Independence Road SW

Moon Road SW at State Route 12

Independence Road SW from Van Dyke Road SW to Marble Street SW

Gravel portion of Anderson Road SW north of State Route 12

Even though flood waters are receding, flooding on the following roadways is still a hazard, and drivers are reminded to obey closure signs and not to drive on the flooded roads. "The Chehalis River basin drains very slowly and it will take a while for all of the flooded areas and roads to clear," Thurston County Emergency Manager Kathy Estes said in the release. "The Chehalis River and other area rivers are still running high and more rain is on the way, so drivers should be cautious throughout the holiday weekend and not drive on flooded roadways." The National Weather Service Flood Warning remains in effect for the Chehalis River at Grand Mound until late Wednesday night. Though the Chehalis flood waters peaked at Grand Mound about one foot above flood stage earlier today, the river continues to run high and flood waters will recede slowly through Thursday evening. The weather forecast through the Thanksgiving weekend is not anticipated to bring rivers in Thurston County up to flood stage again. Road closure updates and other information about area flooding from recent storms is available on the Thurston County Emergency Management webpages at http://www.co.thurston.wa.us/em/EI/EI.htm.
