Colin Kaepernick made his second career start at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

The second-year pro made his first start last week against the Chicago Bears, completing 16-of-23 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns in a 32-7 rout.

Kaepernick is starting in place of Alex Smith, who is recovering from a concussion he sustained in a Nov. 11 tie against the Rams.

Smith, however, has been cleared for contact and the decision to start Kaepernick was not based on health, according to a report on Wednesday.
