More than 100 DUI arrests made in Pierce, Thurston over holiday weekend
CHELSEA KROTZERMore than 100 DUI arrests were made over the Thanksgiving holiday in Thurston and Pierce counties, the bulk of them by the Washington State Patrol. Troopers made 90 DUI arrests from early Thursday morning through 5 a.m. Monday, one fewer than during the same time last year, said Trooper Guy Gill. Also over this year’s holiday, Thurston County Sheriff’s deputies made eight arrests, and Tumwater and Olympia police made two each. Lacey police didn’t have numbers available. Agencies statewide are focusing on driving under the influence through the end of the year, putting more officers on the road specifically looking for DUIs. “We measure our success over the holiday weekend by there being no serious injury or fatality collisions,” Gill said. “With 90 impaired drivers arrested and no serious or fatal collisions, we consider that a success.” Despite the yearly increased patrols, some drivers do not get the message, Gill said. “The thing people need to realize is it is very well-covered in the media, newspapers, on the TV, the Internet and social media that there are extra patrols out,” he said. “We have one simple goal, as always: to remove as many impaired drivers from our roads as possible.”
