A man found dead inside a burned-out Ford Bronco in a remote area of the Capitol State Forest has been identified as 53-year-old Scott J. Madison of Olympia.

State Department of Natural Resources employees found the burning car about 9 a.m. Tuesday on the E-Line Road in the southern portion of the forest. Firefighters discovered the body while putting out the blaze and called detectives.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating Madison’s death as suspicious. Accelerants were apparently used to start the blaze, Sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin said. The death could have been a suicide or a homicide, Elwin added.

Madison’s cause and manner of death are pending further investigation.
