Three people have been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the Nov. 21 shooting of Barbara Giles, a 30-year-old Shelton-area woman who was fatally wounded when she answered her door.

According to Dean Byrd, Chief Deputy for the Mason County Sheriff’s Department, the three are:

• Anthony Raymond Miller, 37, of Shelton, a former male domestic partner of Giles’.

• Miller’s 16-year-old daughter.

• James R. Hartfield, 18, of Des Moines, the boyfriend of Miller’s daughter. Hartfield allegedly fired the lethal shots.

The three, who were arrested Thursday, ordered were each held on $1.5 million bail during a court appearance Friday, Byrd said.

The shooting was reported at 3:38 a.m. Nov. 21. Hartfield shot Giles multiple times when she answered her door, Byrd said. She died of her wounds Saturday at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

An investigation found that Miller and his daughter were conspiring to commit murder as early as Nov. 15, based on text messages between the two, Byrd said. The motive appears to be child-custody issues between Giles and Miller.
