Edwards, 29, joined the team on a one-year deal as a free agent during training camp at the end of July and had to fight for a roster spot. But Edwards emerged as a starter for Seattle in the season opener at Arizona because Golden Tate began the season with a knee issue.
However, Edwards had knee issues of his own this season, missing the Detroit game Oct 28 because of swelling in his knee before the game. Edwards tore the meniscus in his right knee while with San Francisco last season, which led to the Niners releasing him.
Edwards played in 10 games for Seattle, finishing with eight catches for 74 yards and a touchdown.
The Seahawks now have five receivers on the active roster in Sidney Rice, Doug Baldwin, Charly Martin, Jermaine Kearse and Tate.
Seattle also has three receivers on the practice squad in Corbin Louks, Lavasier Tuinei and Phil Bates, so coach Pete Carroll could move one of those players to the active roster to replace Edwards.
Carroll said Monday that Carpenter re-injured his surgically repaired knee during the opening series of Sunday’s game in Chicago. However, Carroll also indicated that he believed Carpenter did not suffer a major injury.
John Moffitt and rookie J.R. Sweezy are slated to compete for the left guard spot Carroll said Monday.
The Seahawks added offensive lineman Rishaw Johnson from the practice squad to the active roster to bolster the depth on the offensive line.
