The home in the 5600 block of Camelot Drive S.W. caught fire shortly after 11:30 a.m. Friday, according to Davie Kindell, fire department spokesperson.
One of the tenants and a guest were asleep in the house when the guest woke up and saw smoke, Kindell said.
"She woke up and saw the smoke and then went and woke up the other tenant," Kindell said. "For whatever reason, the smoke detector in the bedroom didn't alert them, either from a dead battery or it was old."
Both made it out of the home without injury. A second tenant showed up to the house as crews battled the fire.
Kindell said there was heavy smoke damage throughout the house, meaning a large amount of the personal items inside will not be salvageable.
Fire crews were able to save the tenant's instruments: four guitars and two ukulele.
"They were thrilled because that was, for them, one of the more important things in the house to them," Kindell said.
Fire investigators are at the house trying to determine what started the fire.
The tenants, some of which are South Puget Sound Community College Students, have been put in contact with the Red Cross and other resources that offer assistance, Kindell said.
Crews from McLane Black Lake, Griffin and East Olympia fire responded Friday.
