A teenager was recovering from a gunshot wound in the abdomen Saturday after he helped stop a robbery in a west Olympia parking lot.
Olympia police were called shortly after midnight to an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Fern Street Southwest, where they found a 16-year-old boy with a gunshot wound and the alleged gunman being held down by other teens.
The 16-year-old was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital, where he was expected to make a full recovery.
A 29-year-old transient who frequents the Olympia area was taken into custody in connection with the shooting, police said. He is known to police and has a criminal history, detective Sgt. Aaron Jelcick said.
The incident began after a man with a gun approached four teens and demanded their belongings and car, Jelcick said.
The 16-year-old tried to stop the man from taking the car, which had two teenage girls inside.
“He went hands-on with the subject,” the detective said.
The teen was shot during the struggle. No one else was hurt and the other teens were able to subdue the shooter until police arrived, police said.
The suspect was booked into the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery and second-degree assault.Chelsea Krotzer: 360-754-5476 firstname.lastname@example.org theolympian.com/thisjustin @chelseakrotzer
