A world of items under one roof

ROLF BOONE

Walk into Worldly Girl, a new clothing consignment business in Lacey, and you’ll find yourself wandering through seven display rooms, all of them literally festooned with clothes, or accessories, or vintage clothes, or housewares, or antiques, or casual clothes.

“There’s something for every woman,” said owner Shelli Gray.

Gray, 55, is a self-described “junk and treasure hunter,” who has spent a lifetime going to flea markets and yard sales.

When the business opened in July 2011, the initial inventory was provided by Gray, her mother and her daughter, Stephanie. Since then, the business has grown by adding more than 200 consignment accounts – accounts in which sellers agree to have Gray sell their item and then split the sale proceeds.

The business at 4715 Lacey Blvd. has the feel of a single-family residence, and each of its seven rooms is a different stop on the tour.

One room has leather boots, accessories, casual clothes, designer sunglasses and bags; another has vintage clothing; another has jeans; then it’s on to antiques, household items, lingerie and swimwear. The store also sells handmade items, such as canvas tapestry bags and locally produced jewelry.

Some of the handmade jewelry was produced by her daughter, Stephanie, and friend Rachel Serrano. Serrano is also a full-time employee at the store.

One of their creations is a quirky bacon-and-egg ring.

“There’s definitely a lot of stuff,” Serrano said about the store.

Lareena Besse of Olympia said she visits the store weekly, although not necessarily to buy, but to check or add to the items she sells on consignment.

“One thing that makes them unique is that they take in other things,” she said, pointing out that the business sells more than clothing.

Besse also praised Gray’s leadership.

“She knows everything that’s in the shop, is hands-on with every customer and is really congenial,” Besse said.

“It’s just fun to go in there,” she added.

Another customer, Dorothy Payne of Olympia, loves the store’s variety.

“No matter what you’re looking for you can find it,” she said.
