DuPont man allegedly passed deputy's patrol car at 90 mph

A 27-year-old DuPont man was arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly driving up behind a Thurston County Sheriff’s deputy’s marked patrol car and passing it at about 90 mph.

The man was arrested on suspicion of eluding a police vehicle; he was released Tuesday from the Thurston County Jail after a judge ordered him released on his own recognizance, meaning he did not have to post bail.

The man has no prior arrest history, court papers state. Also according to court papers:

The man was driving 90 mph about 2 a.m. while headed north on state Route 510 when he passed the patrol car by moving into the oncoming lane of traffic.

The deputy activated the patrol car’s siren and pursued the man as he drove onto Reservation Road. The suspect didn’t slow down. He pulled over on 25th Avenue Southeast but ignored the deputy’s commands to turn off his vehicle.

The deputy approached the vehicle with his gun drawn, yelling at the driver to show his hands.

“The driver was smoking a cigarette and stared blankly at him,” court papers state. “He eventually showed his hand after the fourth command.”

The suspect also refused to comply with the deputy’s commands to lie on the ground. Eventually, after he was handcuffed, the deputy asked if he knew why he had been stopped.

“I have an idea,” the man replied.
