Lacey Top Food & Drug store set to close

The Top Food & Drug Store in Lacey at 5600 Martin Way is set to close in the next four to six weeks, the store's parent company, Haggen Inc., announced Wednesday.

The Bellingham-based company said it will work with the union that represents employees to place them at other Haggen stores. The Lacey store employs 47.

“As a company, we continually evaluate our stores and identify opportunities to strengthen our overall business,” said John Turley, Co-President and Senior Vice-President of Operations at Haggen, Inc. “We make this decision reluctantly, knowing that it will impact our dedicated employees and loyal customers. We appreciate the patronage of our Lacey residents and hope they will consider visiting our Olympia location.”

In terms of tax revenue, the state has benefited from the first year of I-1183. In the collection periods between July 11, 2012, and May 10, 2013, the state brought in $223.5 million in liquor spirit taxes, an 11.2 percent increase compared to the same period a year earlier, according to data from the Washington State Department of Revenue.

The broken Skagit River bridge on Interstate 5 is already disrupting commerce in the Pacific Northwest, with travel delays of more than an hour at midday Friday, May 24, near the area of the collapse.

For the trucking and transportation industries, dealing with a disconnected I-5 is a big deal. It's estimated that 600,000 truck trips are made south from Canada through the Whatcom County border crossings each year, with 70 percent of that traffic heading south of the Skagit bridge, said Don Alper, director of the Border Policy Research Institute at Western Washington University.

It's also a big deal for the northbound truck traffic, with about 500,000 truck trips annually through the border crossings into Canada. That's between $10 billion and $12 billion in commerce flowing in either direction, Alper said.
