Archivist Handfield served state capably

As a direct descendent of Col. Michael T. Simmons, leader of the first wagon train of settlers into what would become the state of Washington, I wish to thank our outgoing State Archivist extraordinaire, Jerry Handfield, for his amazing “above and beyond” accomplishments in preserving our state’s history for today’s and future generations.

Under Jerry’s highly capable direction, our State Archives has gained favorable national recognition to the extent that Jerry has become an adviser of sorts to various other state archives.

It will be difficult to imagine the Washington State Archives without Jerry Handfield at the helm. I’m certain the standing-room-only, packed room of well-wishers who recently attended a gathering in Jerry’s honor will agree with my sentiments. Thank you, Jerry, for your efforts toward our own realization of our great state heritage.

I wish you continued success as you move on to other endeavors. But as our hard-working state archivist who has put Washington state on the map, please know that you will be greatly missed.
