The 23-year-old student pilot was flying a small plane from Hoquiam to Bremerton during a cross country solo-flight when he lost power in bad weather over Mason County, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.
The pilot tried to land the plane on Shelton Matlock Road when the plane's wing hit a road sign, causing the aircraft to flip.
The plane landed 20 feet of the roadway upside down. The pilot was not injured.
The Washington State Patrol, Mason County Sheriff's Department, and Fire District 12 responded to the scene. The road was blocked during the response.
