Today is Saturday, Jan. 26, the 13th day of the 105-day legislative session.

Monday

Legislation that aims to protect citizens’ ability to restore classic cars in their garages will get a hearing before the Senate Government Operations Committee. Senate Bill 5121 would prevent cities and towns from passing ordinances that prevent people from restoring hobby or old vehicles on their property. The hearing is at 10 a.m. in Hearing Room 2 of the John A. Cherberg Building.

Kids who are suspended or expelled from school will be the topic of conversation in the Senate Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee, when the committee will hear several bills that attempt to help students and improve policies surrounding such disciplinary measures. The bills will be heard at 1:30 p.m. in Hearing Room 1 of the John A. Cherberg Building.

The House Appropriations Committee will hear a briefing on long-term care programs and programs for the developmentally disabled when it meets at 3:30 p.m. The meeting will be in Hearing Room A of the John L. O’Brien Building.

The House Transportation Committee is having a work session on passenger rail and freight rail at 3:30 p.m. The meeting will take place in Hearing Room B of the John L. O’Brien Building.

More than two-dozen organizations representing outdoor recreation businesses will converge on the Capitol Campus for Big Tent Day to talk about the role that outdoor recreation plays in Washington state’s economy. Informational displays will be set up from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Legislative Building and at campus parking areas.

Additionally, during Humane Lobby Day, members of the Humane Society of the United States will petition lawmakers to improve the treatment of animals in Washington.

New Bills

Senate Bill 5329 would transfer low-performing public schools to a new school district overseen by the state superintendent of public instruction. A “learning management organization” would then be contracted to develop a school transformation plan for each school in the new district. The proposal is sponsored by Sen. Steve Litzow, R-Mercer Island.
