A hearing for a bill concerning criminals wearing body armor is scheduled for 8 a.m. in front of the Senate Committee on Law & Justice. Senate Bill 5119 would add new sentence enhancements to certain crimes involving the use or possession of deadly weapons. Sen. Mike Carrell, R-Lakewood, is the prime sponsor. The hearing is in Senate Hearing Room 2 in the John A. Cherberg Building

A proposal to provide universal health care coverage for state residents will get a public hearing before the House Committee on Health Care and Wellness at 1:30 p.m. in House Hearing Room B in the John L. O’Brien Building. House Bill 1085 is sponsored by Rep. Sherry Appleton, D-Poulsbo.

Legislation requiring the notification of teachers and parents about sex offenders attending schools will receive a public hearing today by the Senate Committee on Early Learning and K-12 Education. The hearing on Senate Bill 5094, sponsored by Sen. Kirk Pearson, R-Monroe, is scheduled for 8 a.m. in Senate Hearing Room 1 in the John A. Cherberg Building.

ON CAMPUS

Community and technical college students will rally from noon-2 p.m. on the north steps of the Legislative Building and in the Rotunda. The Washington State Council of Unions and Student Programs is sponsoring the gathering of college students and student advocates.

The Washington State Society for Human Resource Management Council will hold their HR Day on the Hill. The group will meet with legislators throughout the day and plans to gather in the Columbia Room in the Legislative Building.

NEW BILLS

Senate Bill 5485, sponsored by Sen. Adam Kline, D-Seattle, would allow those who fail to exercise standard care in keeping children younger than 14 from firearms to be charged with criminal negligence.

Senate Bill 5499, sponsored by Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, calls for initiative measures to be filed with the secretary of state 20 months prior its election, double the current time.

House Bill 1589, sponsored by Rep. Zack Hudgins, D-Tukwila, would allow state, county and municipal officials to perform marriages.
