TODAY IN THE LEGISLATURE

The Senate Agriculture, Water & Rural Economic Development Committee will meet at 10 a.m. in Hearing Room 4 of the J.A. Cherberg Building for a public hearing on Initiative 522, which would require the labeling of genetically engineered food.

The Senate Human Services & Corrections Committee will hear a bill to require drug testing for welfare recipients. Senate Bill 5585 will be heard at 10 a.m. in Hearing Room 1 of the J.A. Cherberg Building.

The Senate Governmental Operations Committee will hold hearings on several proposals dealing with the power of initiative and referendum, including Initiative 517, which would set penalties for harassment of signature gatherers. The committee meets at 10 a.m. in Hearing Room 2 in the J.A. Cherberg Building.

A proposal to tax plastic shopping bags will be heard at 3:30 p.m. in Senate Ways & Means in Hearing Room 4 of the J.A. Cherberg Building. The measure is Senate Bill 5248.

ELSEWHERE ON CAMPUS

The Refugee Women’s Alliance is organizing a Refugee & Immigrant Legislative Day. The group, which expects to draw 1,500 to the Capitol Campus, will rally on the Legislative Building steps at 11:45 a.m.

The Washington chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association and the Associated General Contractors of Washington also plan visits to the campus.

Members of the YMCA’s Youth Legislature will attend a breakfast with lawmakers in the Rotunda at 9 a.m. The event will feature remarks by Youth Governor Houston Warren, a student at Lakeside School in Seattle.
