Share the Oscars with other South Sound film lovers

The stars will be out early Sunday evening when the Olympia Film Society hosts its annual Academy Awards Oscar Party at the Capitol Theater in Olympia.

The theater’s screen will show the 85th Annual Academy Awards hosted by Seth MacFarlane, while local hosts Emmie Forman and Sy Khan will keep the Olympia crowd busy with a trivia contest and other entertainment that will preempt commercials. A silent auction will be held in the lobby.

“It’s a social experience – rather than sitting home in your pajamas and watching it on TV. It’s a party,” said Helen Thornton, OFS’s programming director.

As film stars arrive at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Olympia celebs (defined as anyone who has bought a ticket) will walk the red carpet leading in to the Capitol Theater. A video camera-equipped interview team will quiz attendees on who they are wearing and their Oscar picks. The glamour will be broadcast live inside the theater before the official broadcast begins.

As in years past, attendees can have their pictures made with two real Oscars. Both are on loan from Olympia resident Kathryn Ashe and were awarded to her grandfather Arthur Freed, a legendary Hollywood producer and lyricist behind some of the biggest hits in Hollywood’s Golden Era from 1940 to 1960. Two of his films won the Academy Award for Best Picture: “An American in Paris” and “Gigi.”

The event is open to all ages, and admission includes hors d’oeuvres by Nineveh. Beer, wine and cocktails will be for sale in the mezzanine. Craig Sailor: 253-597-8541
