Even though students have the day off because of a teacher in-service day, grief counseling will be made available Friday morning at Olympia High following news that the school’s longtime band director Scott Pierson has died.

“We’re very sad to hear of his passing,” district spokeswoman Rebecca Japhet said. “We would like to offer our condolences to the family.”

District officials sent an email to Olympia High families about the news today.

Besides teaching band at Olympia High, Pierson was involved in music programs at several elementary schools in the Olympia School District.

“At this time we do not have specific details related to Scott’s passing,” the e-mail stated. “...We are making counselors available tomorrow at Olympia High School to serve as a resource for our students, staff, and families as they work through the grieving process and have the need to talk or express difficult feelings. Counselors will be available on Friday, March 1 in OHS Room 106 from 10 a.m. to noon. We will also have staff available to assist students on Monday and throughout the following days and weeks as needed.”

Pierson began working in the district in early 2001, Japhet said.
