Sheriff's detectives are investigating a man on suspicion of vehicular assault while driving under the influence of alcohol after a two-vehicle crash in the 5500 block of Rich Road Sunday night.

The crash resulted in serious injuries to the suspected drunken driver's wife, who was riding as a passenger with her husband, Thurston County Sheriff's Lt. Greg Elwin said.

Elwin said the wreck occurred about 5:45 p.m. Sunday night in the southbound lanes of Rich Road, when the suspected drunken driver hit another vehicle that was parked on the shoulder of Rich Road and was trying to make a u-turn.

The suspected drunken driver's wife suffered serious leg injuries and was in surgery Monday, Elwin said.

Elwin said the single occupant of the vehicle that was making the u-turn suffered minor injuries. The suspected drunken driver also suffered injuries, he said.
