The Saint Martin's University softball team earned the program's first national ranking in program history Wednesday, when the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's ranked the Saints No. 23 overall in this week's Top 25 poll. The Saints are the only team from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in this week's national poll.
The Saints (26-11) are coming off a 6-1 mark at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif., last weekend, including a 5-4 upset win over then No. 9-ranked Humboldt State to snap the Lumberjacks' 18-game winning streak.
SMU started its softball program in 1992 with its first Division II season in 1999. In 2011, the Saints won just nine games under then-first-year coach Rick Noren and went 33-18-1 last spring for an 18-win improvement. At 8-4 and in second place in GNAC play, the Saints host Western Oregon in a doubleheader Thursday starting at 2 p.m.
