A 13-year-old boy was seriously hurt after being struck by a pickup truck in Tumwater Wednesday night, according to police.

The boy was reportedly lying in the middle of Linderson Way Southwest near the intersection of Dennis Street Southwest when he was hit by the pickup truck at around 9:45 p.m.

“It’s unclear why he was there,” said Tumwater Police Department Det. Jen Kolb.

The driver of the pickup, a 51-year-old Tumwater man, failed a field sobriety test and was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault, Kolb said.

“We believe he was under the influence of an unknown substance,” Kolb said.

The boy was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia where he underwent emergency surgery. He was then taken to Harborview with “some pretty serious injuries,” Kolb said.
