Lack of respect, anarchism aren’t becoming

April 29, 2013

Voters frequently think their elected officials do and say funny things. But when Tenino Mayor Eric Strawn turns legitimate taxpayers’ concerns into a joke, it’s not funny. The mayor, who apparently fancies himself as a stand-up comedian, recently performed at a comedy club where he reportedly made jokes about citizen complaints, domestic violence and child molestation.

The mayor has shown a shocking lack of respect for Tenino citizens and his elected office.

We’re curious why The Evergreen State College continues to allow the breeding of anarchists on its campus. At a recent anarchy workshop there, participants destroyed the camera equipment of an uninvited guest. The occasional violence and vandalism perpetrated by anarchists linked to the college tend to overshadow all of the positive contributions to this community made by TESC and its graduates.

An improved unemployment rate in Thurston County is yet another sign that the Great Recession is receding. The jobless rate fell from 8.3 percent in February down to 7.9 percent in March, and that’s better than 8.5 percent a year ago. It’s a small improvement, but at least the number is going in the correct direction.

It’s hard enough to graduate from high school these days, but if you also have a part-time job, the odds might seem stacked against you. Hats off to Altrusa International of Olympia for annually giving $700 scholarships to South Sound graduating seniors who have worked their way through high school. The women’s service club honored one student from nine high schools last week.

Receiving awards this year were Nicole Talcott (Rainier), Summer Fortner (Rochester), Brittany Smith (Shelton), Dalton Brown (Yelm), Demitria Sharp (South Sound), Adick Ketta (Olympia), Tristan Johnson (Choice), Katherine Janis (Capital) and Giovanna Graciani (North Thurston).

It’s hard to be president. President Barack Obama took 131 vacation days in his first four-year term. President George W. Bush took about four times as many, an average of 530 days per term, or 1,060 days over two terms. Still, most U.S. workers took between 40 and 80 days during that same time period.

The Nielsen Co. has created a new demographic in its television audience measurements: the Zero TV household. An increasing number of people –5 million households last year, up from 2 million in 2007 – are watching TV shows and movies on Internet sites via computer, tablet and cellphone. One of the reasons for the trend: cable companies’ inability to let viewers pick a custom bundle of channels, instead forcing them to take channels they never watch.

Capital High School students Rian Chandra and Sumukh Bharadwaj earned the right to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix next month. Their individual projects will compete with about 1,500 others for nearly $3 million in prizes. Bharadwaj’s project involves supersonic technology, while Chandra is part of a team from other schools that built a small-scale nuclear fusion reactor.

All we can do is reprint the opening paragraph in a Seattle Times story: “A high-profile Army Medical Command task force charged with improving the health care atmosphere among patients and staff was shut down ... after an investigation found that it created a ‘toxic and intimidating working environment’ in its own ranks.” Task force leaders at Madigan Army Medical Center apparently used bullying tactics during the training.

A Tacoma municipal court judge has ordered city police to return the small amount of marijuana seized from a man’s vehicle during a traffic stop last summer. Prosecutors had dropped the misdemeanor charge after passage of Initiative 502, but kept the pot.
