Sean Shaughnessy will begin July 1 as principal of Roosevelt Elementary School in Olympia.
The schools principal search committee unanimously recommended his hiring late last week, and the Olympia School Board approved it Monday night.
Shaughnessy has more than a decade of teaching experience at elementary and middle schools.
During the past three years, he has worked as a special education teacher at McKenny Elementary School. He assisted the principal in developing the school schedule, setting school goals and supervising students.
In addition, Shaughnessy has served as a substitute principal at several Olympia schools, and will oversee the districts middle and high school summer school program.
Sean will be a great fit for the students, families and staff at Roosevelt, superintendent Dick Cvitanich said in a news release. He has a wide range of experience and knowledge that will serve the community and the district well as he takes on this new role.
Shaughnessy is completing the school administrators certification program at the University of Washington. He will replace Roosevelt principal Domenico Spatola-Knoll, who is taking the helm at Madison Elementary School on July 1. Longtime Madison principal Gayle Mar-Chun is retiring.
Roosevelt Elementary School, on Olympias east side, serves about 400 students in preschool to fifth grade.
