A Thurston County woman was hospitalized Thursday after the minivan she was driving collided with a dump truck at the intersection of Rich Road and Hickory Court across from The Arts Park.
The driver of the minivan was northbound on Rich Road about 8:30 a.m. when the minivan crossed the center line, hitting the left side of a Great Western Supply truck, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Mealy.
The two front wheels of the dump truck were torn off by the impact.
The front of the van and the driver’s side were heavily damaged.
The driver of the van was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia as a precaution, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin. The woman had just dropped her three children off at school.
The driver of the dump truck was not injured, just “shaken up,” Mealy said.
No citations have been issued, Elwin said. “No alcohol, no drugs and no reckless driving was identified,” he said. “The only issue is what caused her to drift over the center line.”
The drivers’ identities were not released Thursday.
Denise Keegan lives across the street from where the collision occurred and said the sound “was horrific.”
“The whole house shook,” Keegan said.
“We thought there had been an explosion of some kind.”
Crashes are not rare on that section of road, Keegan said. There use to be a gate leading to her property, but after it was struck three times, she opted to take it out.
“People speed through here so much and cross the double yellow line,” Keegan said.Chelsea Krotzer: 360-754-7546 email@example.com theolympian.com/thisjustin @chelseakrotzer
