TACOMA: King County deputy dies after crash

May 24, 2013

A King County sheriff’s deputy died Wednesday night at Tacoma General Hospital from injuries suffered in an off-duty motorcycle crash Monday near Frederickson, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Martin “Marty” Duran, 47, served in the Army before becoming a paramedic and firefighter in New Mexico, Sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindi West said. He eventually became a deputy with the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office in New Mexico, and in 2004 started working for King County.

He most recently worked out of the Burien station, in the White Center and Skyway areas.

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies still are investigating the crash, which happened about 5 p.m. in the 7500 block of 176th Street East near Frederickson.

Witnesses have told investigators a white van might have made a U-turn in front of Duran. Skid marks indicate he stopped abruptly, causing him to lose control of the bike, Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Ed Troyer said. Anyone with information is asked to call Pierce County deputies at 253-798-4721.

Duran is survived by his wife, daughter and adult son. Services will be held in New Mexico.
