Thurston County needs volunteers to serve on advisory boards, committees, and commissions that meet on a regular basis and make recommendations on issues to the Board of County Commissioners. Currently there are vacancies on the Agriculture Advisory Committee, Board of Equalization, EMS Council, Historic Commission, RSN Mental Health Advisory Board, Deschutes River Basin and Black River Basin representatives, Timberland Regional Library Board, Veterans’ Advisory Board and Water Conservancy Board. The Thurston County Amateur Radio Emergency Service team needs volunteers who want to help their neighbors and the community during disasters, and who enjoy or are interested in learning about ham radio. The Bigelow House Museum needs volunteers to tell the story of early Washington and of pioneers Daniel and Ann Elizabeth Bigelow. Northwest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center Needs volunteers to process used eyeglasses to be used in missions, locally and around the world. Duties include sorting and washing. Lensometer technicians are also needed to read lens prescriptions for labeling and bagging. Three-hour shifts are available at various times. Call 360-923-2075, and leave a message.

Sea Mar community health center needs volunteers to serve vulnerable members of the population by helping with administrative duties, maintaining the community garden, making displays to educate patients about their health, and community outreach. Senior Services for South Sound a nonprofit organization serving the over-55 population of Thurston and Mason counties, needs volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels in the Olympia, Lacey, Rochester, and Tenino areas. It also needs volunteers to work in the Coffee Shoppe, Trips Department, and Transportation Department. Call Joyce at 360-586-6181.

RETIRED & SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (RSVP) places volunteers older than 55 in positions throughout Thurston, Mason and Lewis counties. Current opportunities include: activities assistants at the Hands On Children’s Museum, volunteers at Blockfest events with the Childcare Action Council,; tutors for adults in reading and math skills for Sound Learning, advocates for the homeless through Sidewalk, tour guides at Wolf Haven, site stewards for Nisqually Land Trust.
