Basketball notes: River Ridge’s Wallace signs with nationally ranked JC, Olympia’s Leonard signs with Air Force, Olympia girls hire coach

A few basketball news and notes to pass along from the past few weeks:

Recent River Ridge High School graduate Brad Wallace has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene. NIC is a nationally ranked junior-college program that sent six players from its 2012-13 team on to NCAA Division I programs. Wallace, a three-time 2A Evergreen Conference MVP in basketball, two-time Olympian all-area player of the year and 2A state player of the year by the WIBCA, averaged 28 points per game last season and is part of a 12-player recruiting class for NIC. … Olympia’s Brendon Leonard honored his verbal commitment and signed with Division I Air Force. The 6-foot-8 forward with an outside shooting touch averaged 10 points and 8 rebounds a game as a senior for the Bears. … Olympia promoted ‘C’ team girls coach Tina Washington to take over as varsity coach, replacing Rod Tripp, who resigned after three seasons. Washington has experience coaching all levels of high school basketball, including a stint as a girls varsity coach at Eastside Catholic in 2008-’09. ... W.F. West's Jamika Parker signed with Western Washington for women's basketball, joining a Vikings program that advanced to the NCAA Division II national semifinals. Parker, The Olympian's all-area girls player of the year, is the Bearcats' all-time career shot blocker and led the team to the 2A state title game in March. ... Yelm’s Anushka Maldonado has signed with Odessa (Texas) College, a junior college, for women’s basketball. The 6-0 forward averaged 12.6 points and 9 rebounds a game for the Tornados last season.
