McCaslin in lead at City Am

Reigning Capital City Amateur champion Jon McCaslin shot a 1-under-par 71 Saturday at High Cedars Golf Club to tie for the first-round lead in the annual Tacoma City Amateur.

Joining McCaslin at 71 were recent Puyallup High School graduate Vinnie Murphy, two-time City Amateur champion Sean Packer from Bonney Lake and University of Washington freshman Tyler Salsbury from Enumclaw.

Another half-dozen players matched the par of 72 at the Orting golf course.

The second round of the City Amateur will tee off Sunday at Brookdale Golf Course in Spanaway.

Qualifiers will play the final round June 23 at Eagles Pride Golf Course at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.


A hole-in-one helped Simon Thornton of Ireland take a share of the lead at after the third round of the Najeti Hotels Open in Saint-Omer, France

Thornton shot a 6-under 65 to share a one-stroke lead with Tjaart Van der Walt of South Africa and Baptiste Chapellan of France.

Thornton made two eagles, including a hole-in-one on the 206-yard 11th hole, and three birdies for a 4-under 209 total.

Chapellan shot a 69, while overnight leader Van der Walt had a 71.

Seve Benson of England shot a 70 to move into fourth place, one stroke ahead of Max Glauert of Germany, Chris Lloyd of England and Victor Riu of France, who are tied for fifth at 211.
